SKANK is a Brazilian band that was founded in Belo Horizonte (MG) in 1991. The band, composed of Samuel Rosa (guitar and vocals), Henrique Portugal (keyboard), Lelo Zaneti (bass), and Haroldo Ferreti (drums), wanted to ‘unify the atmosphere of a Jamaican music temple with traditional Brazilian rock music‘. Their first album, ‘Skank‘ was produced without label, but the band gained great popularity in a short time. Sony became interested in Skank. More ten albums were produced, among them a live registration of their concert in Ouro Preto (MG, 2001). The song ‘Acima do Sol‘ was then played for the first time. At present (end 2011), Skank has sold more than 5.5 million albums; they also enjoy popularity abroad. In 2009, Skank won the Latin Grammy Award, and recently, in 2011, a Golden Lion at the Creativity Festival in Cannes, for the best commercial for a new song.

The single ‘Garota Nacional’ was listed on their third album, ‘Samba Poconé’. It topped the Spanish charts for three months. It also became the only song in Portuguese language that was included in the ‘Soundtrack for a Century’, to celebrate Sony’s centennial in 1997. ‘Garota Nacional’ refers to the beauty of the female patrons of bar/night club ‘Nacional’ in Belo Horizonte, during the nineties.
