Stadiums under Construction (DEC 2012)
World Cup Soccer 2014 will be hosted by Brazil. Twelve cities have been selected as host cities. Modern stadiums are being constructed there. An overview of the progress of these constructions, in December 2012.
The 12 host cities:
Rio de Janeiro (RJ), São Paulo (SP), Belo Horizonte (MG), Brasília (DF), Porto Alegre (RS), Curitiba (PR), Cuiabá (MT), Salvador (BA), Recife (PE), Natal (RN), Fortaleza (CE), Manaus (AM)
Update at the end of December 2012:
In December, the number of construction workers increased to a total of six thousand, in order to accelerate the construction works. Decisions were made about the illumination system, which had to follow the strict rules of the FIFA. There will be 396 projectors, which will be able to eliminate virtually all shadows, and provide optimal visibility on the entire playing field.
In December, the arena received the eight module of the coverage of the grandstand in sector east. This piece of 75 meters weighed 140 tons. Only one more module should be placed in the east sector, to be done in January. Soccer club Corinthians, owner of the new stadium, announced plans to build a nightclub inside the stadium.
On 21 December, Mineirão Stadium was inaugurated with a large-scale party in the presence of president Dilma and a show of pop group Jota Quest. The constructor was still working on finishing details, as the installation of internet and the search for commercial partnerships for the bars and restaurants.
The first stage of the installation of the coverage was completed in December. The lifting process of the 48 supporting cables lasted eight days. The next step will be the installation of the trellises – metal supporting beams. In December, adjustments were made in the budget of the stadium – by the Brazilian Sports Department -, which will surpass one billion reais.
December was the first month, in which the stadium was completely closed for matches. It was now possible to intensify the modernization works, that mainly will be performed at the lower grandstands and the playing field. The grass field was completely removed. Visitors were allowed to witness the reform works.
There is still slow progress of the construction works. Soccer club Atlético-PR was still waiting for the first part of the financing of 131 million reais, to be released by the Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES). This part (value of 26 million reais) became available and was expected to be transferred in January 2013.
Another working shift was introduced, this shift would be active from 20h to 5 h in the morning. The constructor must complete the installation of the grandstands before the end of January. In January most works will be concentrated on the area of sky boxes, bathrooms and press-rooms.
In December, a start was made with the assembly of the seats at the grandstands. The colors used refer to the tones of the green waters of Dique do Tororó, the lake near the stadium. About 50 thousand chairs in three different models will be assembled. It was expected to have this assembly finished in February.
Half of the coverage was installed, and all grandstands were installed. The works were concentrated at the internal sectors: progress was made with the installation of electrical, hydraulic systems. Bathrooms and snack bars were completed, while the car park and the underground were almost ready.
Natal (RN): 50 % (worrisome)
In December, progress was made with the assembly of the upper ring at the west sector, with the installation of raked beams. A start was made with the installation of electrical and hydraulic system, and the installation of air conditioning in changing rooms and public spaces. About 1600 construction workers were active at the site.
Fortaleza (CE): 100 % (READY)
The Castelão Stadium was inaugurated on 16 December; it was the first completed stadium. In December, adjustments were made with chairs of the upper ring. Quality tests were performed with the products and installations, for the first inaugural match in January.
Manaus (AM): 50 % (worrisome)
Construction works were concentrated at closing the podium wall, construction of the sky boxes, bathrooms and the installation of the upper grandstand at the east sector. From January, the company responsible for the installation of the metal coverage and wall structure would start the assembly of the equipments.
