São Clemente

Samba school São Clemente was founded in Botafogo in 1961. One year later, the school had their first performance, at that time at Avenida Rio Branco, in the center of Rio. The school gained some reputation because of the jolly presentations and some sarcasm about certain actual items. São Clemente was not only dancing on the streets, they also danced between the different classes, up and down. The school is a 4-time champion in the transition class, their best achievement in the elite class was the sixth place in 1990.

Soap series

Theme for this year is

“Horário nobre”.
Prime Time

The samba school will focus on novelas: Brazilian soap series that are extremely popular and that are broadcasted during prime time hours. It is common that Brazilians watch three or four novelas each day. The school investigated the popularity of certain novelas and will present the most popular ones: ‘Roque Santeiro’ (which was censured), ‘Escrava Isaura’, ‘Que Rei Sou Eu’.

Mocidade Independente

Samba school Mocidade Independente was founded in 1955, by the amateurs of soccer club Independente, from the district of Padre Miguel, Rio de Janeiro. During the seventies of the past century, the samba school expanded significantly, greatly due to the support of gambling entrepreneur Castor de Andrade. Mocidade is a 5-time champion in the elite class, their most recent victory dates back from 1996.

Rock in Rio

Theme for this year is

“Eu vou de Mocidade com samba e Rock In Rio – Por um mundo melhor”.
From Mocidade, I go with samba and Rock in Rio, for a better world

Mocidade will present the biggest music festival in Brazil: Rock in Rio. The first edition was held in 1985, with international rock bands as AC/DC, Iron Maiden, Ozzy Osbourne, Queen, Whitesnake, and Scorpions. Other editions in Rio were held in 1991, 2001, and 2011. Other cities as Lisbon, Madrid, Lima, and Buenos Aires were hosts of the international Rock in Rio. The samba school will include diverse rhythms – jazz, rock, punk, blues, reggae, etc – in their presentation. The school also will stress on the motto ‘Por um mundo melhor’, for a better world.

União da Ilha

Samba school União da Ilha was founded in 1953, by a group of friends, who were watching a small parade of samba schools on the island of Ilha do Governador. They worked out the idea that the island needed a big samba school, and União da Ilha was created. The samba school ranked third in the elite class twice, and is 2-time champion in the transition class, in 1974 and in 2009.

Vinicius de Morais

Theme for this year is

“Vinicius, no plural. Paixão, poesia e carnaval”.
Multiple Vinicius. Passion, poetry, and carnival.

Vinicius de Morais (Rio de Janeiro 1913-1980) was a poet, composer, playwright, journalist and diplomat. The samba school commemorates his birth centenary. Vinicius is worldwide known for his composition ‘Garota da Ipanema’. He had strong ties with Ilha do Governador (home of União), since he had spent his holidays and weekends there. His theater piece about the myth of Orpheus became a famous movie: Black Orpheus, which won the Oscar for the best foreign movie in 1960. The samba school also will demonstrate his influence on the bossa nova and his bohemian life style.

Unidos da Tijuca

Samba school Unidos da Tijuca is one of the oldest, still active, samba schools in Brazil. The school was founded on the final day of 1931. Five years later, in 1936, Unidos gained their first championship in the elite class. In that year, the school introduced the samba enredo, that accompanied the parade with music. Between 1960 and 1980, the school suffered great difficulties. Only in 1981 the highest level, the elite class, was reached again. In the past decade, Unidos gained three vice-championships, and two championships: in 2010 and in 2012.

Germany

The theme for this year is

“Desceu num raio, é trovoada. O deus Thor pede passagem para mostrar nessa viagem a Alemanha encantada”.
He descended a lightning, and was thunderous. The god Thor asked for a ride to show an enchanted Germany.

Year 2013 is the Year of Germany in Brazil. The samba school starts the presentation with the Nordic god Thor to introduce the German culture. Vikings, wolves, dragons and other figures of German (hi)stories and fairy tales will be appear. Theater, with Goethe, and opera (‘Flying Dutchman’ from Wagner) are also presented. Playmobil figures and other toys will be enjoyed by children, while modern inventions such as the zeppelin and the rocket will amaze adults.

Salgueiro

Samba school Salgueiro was created in 1953 as a result of the merger between two schools of Morro do Salgueiro: Azul e Branco en Depois eu Digo. Another, third, samba school did not join this merger and ceased to exist some years later. Salgueiro is 2-time champion in the elite class, the titles were gained in 1993 and in 2009.

Theme for this year is

“Fama“.
Fame

Salgueiro was founded sixty years ago, and wants to commemorate this with the theme ‘fame’. The school goes back to the era of the pharaohs, whose were mummified and became famous many centuries later. The school also tells about fame during the Medieval Era and and about masquerades. Salgueiro jokes about photoshopping plastic surgery. A red carpet is carried for the celebrities.

Inocentes de Belford Roxo

Samba school Inocentes de Belford Roxo was founded in 1993, in the city of Belford Roxo (suburb of Rio de Janeiro). From the start, the samba school always participated in the competitions in Rio de Janeiro. In 2000, the school made its debut in the accession group (Grupo A), and gained the fifth place. In 2012, Inocentes became champion of the accession group and will make its debut in the elite group in 2013.

Korea

Theme for this year is

“As sete confluências do Rio Han – 50 anos de imigração da Coreia do Sul no Brasil”.
The seven confluencies of the Han River – 50 years of South Korean migrants in Brazil.

The samba school makes its debut with the presentation of the history, culture and religion of South Korea. It is only fifty years ago when the first Korean migrants arrived in Brazil, but Korea has a long history, more than five thousand years. The Korean colony is very small and is concentrated in São Paulo; about 300 Korean migrants are invited to participate in the presentation.

Vila Isabel

Samba school Vila Isabel finds its origin through a soccer club, which founded a carnival group named Branco e Vermelho. One year later, in 1946, the samba school was founded. Their first appearance happened in front of about 100 spectators only. The school is a 2-time champion in the transition class, and a 2-time champion in the elite class, in 1988 and in 2006.

Country life

Theme for this year is

“A Vila canta o Brasil celeiro do mundo – Água no Feijão que chegou mais um“.
Vila sings about Brazil, barn of the world. Water to the beans, for one more.

Vila Isabel will show us the Brazilian country life. Life of the farmers, who grow crops, breed cattle, produce milk products and meat. The school shows us the simple but happy life of the farmers, who strongly lean on their faith in God. Vila Isabel will not forget to mention the difficulties such as inundations and long-term drought. Many migrants from Portugal, Italy, Germany, Ukraine, Japan, and Poland introduced their knowledge and homeland culture into Brazil.

Imperatriz Leopoldinense

Samba school Imperatriz Leopoldinense was founded in 1959. The name is a homage to empress Leopoldina, the first wife of Brazilian emperor Pedro I. The presentations performed by this school are a guarantee for originality and glamour. Imperatriz is an 8-time champion in the elite class, their most recent victory dates back from 2001.

Pará

Theme for this year is

“Pará – O Muiraquitã do Brasil – Sob a nudez forte da verdade, o manto diáfano da fantasia”.
Pará – the ‘amulet’ of Brazil – Under a strong naked truth, the translucent mantle of fantasy

Imperatriz will show the riches of the state of Pará. They honor the indian tribes who live in synergy with nature, and who helped to develop Pará, when white men arrived there. The school shows the legacy of the gold and rubber eras, which brought much wealth to Belém – its capital – for a short period. Cultural richness will be shown with various pieces of handicraft, musics and dance.

Grande Rio

Samba school Grande Rio was founded in 1988 in Duque de Caxias, a suburb of Rio. The samba school gained a reputation for the participation of artists who managed to create real masterpieces. The school was a fast rising star, who gained the title in the transition class at their fourth parade only. Grande Rio is a 3-time vice-champion in the elite class, in 2006, 2007 en 2010.

Black gold

The theme for this year is

“Amo o Rio e vou à luta: Ouro negro sem disputa… Contra a injustiça em defesa do Rio”.
I love Rio and will fight: Black gold without doubt. Against injustice in the defense of Rio

The samba school refers to offshore petroleum exploration near the state of Rio de Janeiro. The royalties of the exploration should benefit the population, and accelerate regional development. The oil wells are well below (about 2 km) below sea level and may cause environmental damage. Therefore Grande Rio strongly favors compensation for any (future) damage. The school demonstrates the applications of petroleum, and the preservation of the local culture and environment.

Beija-Flor

Samba school Beija-Flor was founded on Christmas Day, 1948, in Nilópolis, a suburb of Rio de Janeiro. About a century ago, predominantly Jewish and Syrian-Lebanese migrants arrived there. The name Beija-Flor (humming bird) is derived from a carnival group from neighboring Marquês de Valença. Beija-Flor is one of the most successful samba schools in Rio, with twelve championships and eleven vice-championships in the elite class. Only in the past decade, the school gained first and second places, except in 2006, and in 2010.

Mangalarga Marchador

Theme for this year is

“Amigo Fiel, do cavalo do amanhecer ao Mangalarga Marchador”.
Faithful friend, from ‘dawn horse’ to Mangalarga Marchador

The samba school has chosen an uncommon theme, about the Brazilian horse breed Mangalarga Marchador. They are descendants from horse breeds from the Iberian Peninsula, The Brazilian horse breed is much valued for their beauty, strength, versatility and intelligence. They are mainly bred in the state of Minas Gerais. The school will also demonstrate the co-evolutionary steps of man and horse in humankind.
