Grande Rio

Samba school Grande Rio was founded in 1988 in Duque de Caxias, a suburb of Rio. The samba school gained a reputation for the participation of artists who managed to create real masterpieces. The school was a fast rising star, who gained the title in the transition class at their fourth parade only. Grande Rio is a 3-time vice-champion in the elite class, in 2006,  2007 en 2010.

The samba school has a broad theme this year: overcome. Superação in Portuguese. To overcome fears, disease, love, life. The school tries to make clear that conquests make friends, build nations, create a world. But one has to work for it. The samba school had really worked hard, when they suffered a big fire, only weeks before the parade in 2011. They overcame this true disappointment, remade everything and participated in the parade  where they were received with big enthusiasm. The school also worked hard to overcome most of their opponents: the school gained several vice-championships in recent years.

Unidos da Tijuca

Samba school Unidos da Tijuca is one of the oldest, still active, samba schools in Brazil. The school was founded on the final day of 1931. Five years later, in 1936, Unidos gained their first championship in the elite class.  In that year, the school introduced the samba enredo, that accompanied the parade with music. Between 1960 and 1980, the school suffered great difficulties. Only in 1981 the highest level, the elite class, was reached again. In the past decade, Unidos gained three vice-championships, and two championships: in 2010 and in 2012.

“O Dia em Que Toda a Realeza Desembarcou na Avenida para Coroar o Rei Luiz do Sertão“.
The day that the Royalties landed on the Street to crown King Luiz (Gonzaga) of the Wilderness. 

Tijuca commemorates the fact that Luiz Gonzaga was born one hundred years ago. Luiz Gonzaga was born and raised in Pernambuco and was a very popular folk singer. Mangueira

Samba school Mangueira is one of the oldest, and one of the most traditional and popular samba schools in Rio. The school was founded in 1928, at Morro de Mangueira, close to the Maracanã Soccer Stadium. Estação Primeira refers to the first station where the tram from Central do Brasil was stopping. The colors pink and green refer to the colors that were used by the carnival group from Laranjeiras: Rancho Os Arrepiados. Mangueira won the championship of the elite class no less than 18 times; their most recent victory dates from 2002.

Salgueiro

São Clemente

Samba school São Clemente was founded in Botafogo in 1961. One year later, the school had their first performance, at that time at Avenida Rio Branco, in the center of Rio. Vila Isabel

Beija-Flor

Samba school Beija-Flor was founded on Christmas Day, 1948, in Nilópolis, a suburb of Rio de Janeiro. About a century ago, predominantly Jewish and Syrian-Lebanese migrants arrived there. Porto da Pedra

At the age of fourteen, he started as an assistant for a group of Italian painters and sculptors that were restoring a church in his native city. Soon his talent was discovered, and through the years, Cândido gained international reputation as a painter. His passion of painting also led to his death. since he died because of the long-term exposure to lead compounds in the paint that was using. The school demonstrates an overview of his life and works.
