General – Blumenau is a city located in the east of the state of Santa Catarina, at 130 km from the capital, Florianópolis. According to IBGE, the city counted 313 thousand inhabitants in 2011. The city is famous for its annual Oktoberfest, the largest beer festival on the American continent.
The region of Blumenau was inhabited by the Indian tribes of Kaigangs, Xoklengs, and Botocudos. In 1850, the German philosopher Dr. Hermann Bruno Otto Blumenau received from the province of Santa Catarina a piece of land, to establish an agricultural colony, with European migrants. On October 2, in the same year, the first colonist arrived. Initially, the colony was property of its founder, Dr. Blumenau. In 1860, the imperial government took over the enterprise, while Dr. Blumenau still was leading the colony, until the elevation to municipality, in 1880. Initially, the region was colonized by Germans, followed by Italians and Poles, and later by descendants of Portuguese. Therefore, Blumenau and neighboring cities have strong German and Italian cultural traditions. In 1934, Blumenau counted more than ten thousand square km. Through the years, almost 40 new municipalities were split from Blumenau.

Tourism – A number of touristic routes are recommended to know the city and the region better. The Historic Cultural Route guides through the city of Blumenau, along the touristic highlights. The Churches Route goes along the churches in the city. Museums may be visited via the Museums Route. The Industrial Route shows the strong European-oriented industries in Blumenau. The Nature Route will follow the track of German scientist Fritz Müller and go through Nova Rússia. Route Vila Itoupava shows authentic German houses and farms, at 25 km from Blumenau. And last but not least, the Route of Home-Brewed Beers will show local breweries with a strong German tradition.
In October, the traditional Oktoberfest will be held in Blumenau, in the German Theme Park Vila Germânica.

A região de Blumenau era habitada por índios Kaigangs, Xoklengs e Botocudos e, mesmo antes da fundação da Colônia Blumenau, já havia famílias estabelecidas na região de Belchior, nas margens do ribeirão Garcia e do rio Itajaí-Açu.
Em 1850, o filósofo alemão Dr. Hermann Bruno Otto Blumenau obteve do Governo Provincial uma área de terras de duas léguas para estabelecer uma colônia agrícola, com imigrantes europeus.
Em 2 de setembro de 1850, dezessete colonos chegaram ao local onde hoje se ergue a cidade de Blumenau. Muitos outros imigrantes atravessavam o Oceano Atlântico em veleiros de companhias particulares. E assim foi crescendo o número de agricultores, povoadores e cultivadores dos lotes, medidos e demarcados ao longo dos rios e ribeirões que banhavam o território da concessão.
No princípio, a Colônia era de propriedade do fundador, Dr. Blumenau. Em 1860 o Governo Imperial encampou o empreendimento e Dr. Blumenau foi mantido na direção até a elevação da colônia à categoria de município, em 1880. Em poucos anos, Dr. Blumenau, dotado de grande energia e tenacidade, fez da colônia um dos maiores empreendimentos colonizadores da América do Sul, criando um importante centro agrícola e industrial influente na economia do País.
Herança da história de sua colonização, a microrregião de Blumenau possui costumes e tradições únicos. Colonizada no início por alemães, seguidos de italianos e poloneses, também recebeu habitantes do Vale do Rio Tijucas, descendentes de portugueses. Mesmo assim, as cidades da microrregião incorporaram principalmente a cultura alemã e italiana.
A Lei nº 860, de 4 de fevereiro de 1880, elevou a colônia à categoria de município. Entretanto, em outubro, uma grande enchente causou sérios prejuízos à população e à administração pública, com a destruição de pontes e estradas. Após isso, a instalação do município só foi possível em 10 de janeiro de 1883, quando assumiu o exercício a Câmara Municipal eleita no ano anterior. Em seguida, o município recebeu o título de Comarca (1886) e, finalmente, em 1928, passou à categoria de Cidade.
Até 1934 o território de Blumenau somava 10.610 km². Hoje se resume a 519,8 km². Trinta e oito novos municípios resultaram de sucessivos desmembramentos. Estes, em conjunto com Blumenau, compõe essa próspera região do Estado de Santa Catarina.
