Destination Fortaleza, capital of the state of Ceará.
Episode 3: In downtown Fortaleza, where you meet a huge variety of merchandise in the streets.
We managed to find a lodgement in Fortaleza, an for free even. This lodgement was only a few blocks from downtown Fortaleza. We asked our hosts if it was safe at night in Fortalea. Their answer was not very assuring: as long there is some movement in the streets, it may be quite safe. However, in deserted streets, we need to be careful. This situation is not that different of Belo Horizonte, or in any Brazilian or even European city. We had rested for a while, and then went for a simple lunch. That afternoon, we entered the center of Fortaleza, following the directions given by our hosts.
As in many major Brazilian cities, there is a lot of merchandize in the streets. I am not referring to narcotics or contraband, but to legal merchandise. Vegetables, fruits, tools, utensils, toys, literally everything is for sale in the streets. Even second-hand clutter is offered, and not on a single day, as is the case in The Netherlands, during Queen’s Day. Everyone who has something to offer and wants to earn some money, will sell his merchandise in the streets, in the hope to sell something to passers-by. The pictures below show some examples of what is offered in the streets in Fortaleza:
