Cultural Center Dragão do Mar
Destination Fortaleza, capital of the state of Ceará.
Episode 5: Dragão do Mar: Cultural Center in Fortaleza, named after a Brazilian hero.
When thinking of ‘Dragão do Mar’ (Sea dragon), you might first think of Southeast Asia, of some kung fu fighting movie. However, this Seadragon is the nickname for a hero from the Brazilian state of Ceará. It was the nickname for Francisco José do Nascimento (1839-1914), born in Canoa Quebrada, what is now a popular beach resort in Ceará. Francisco, also known as ‘Chico da Matilde’, was skipper of a jangada – a wooden boat that is typical for his region – , with which he gained his money. His merits were his fierce opposition against slavery, and he refused to board slaves, which were about to be transported to the south. Partly thanks to Chico´s battle against slavery, Ceará became the first Brazilian province (in 1884) that abolished slavery. One year later, regent princess Isabel signed the law (Lei Áurea) that brought a definitive end to slavery in Brazil. Chico da Matilde received his second nickname for his efforts and resistance.
In 1999, a large cultural center was inaugurated in Fortaleza. It was named after the local hero Chico da Mathilde, ‘Dragão do Mar’. The cultural center is a popular touristic location; it hosts a library, a cultural space with local arts from Ceará, a modern arts museum, and a planetarium. In addition, the three-hectare center contains two movie theaters, a amphitheater, and a theater. The hungry and thirsty tourists may visit the cozy pars and bistros. The large white main building, with tall pillars and openings in the walls, is visible from a large distance. The cultural center is constructed in the former harbor district, by the architects Delberg Ponce de Leon and Fausto Nilo. A row of historical facades, behind which restaurants and bars are located, still remind us of earlier times.
