Destination Maceió, second travel to the capital of the state of Alagoas.
More photos of handicraft artists from Pontal da Barra, at the southernmost point of the peninsula on which Maceió is located (state of Alagoas).
Pontal da Barra
Here is a second series of seven photographs that I took in the little district of Pontal da Barra, near Maceió. It is easy to imagine that fishing activities, mostly done by men, will not always provide enough income for the local people. Therefore, great part of the female population of Pontal da Barra have devoted themselves to the art of handicraft. When visiting the small stores and workshops – more resembling former living rooms from which furniture had been removed to smaller rooms, and of which the frontal walls had been removed – I quickly understood that the broad assortment of handicraft had not only been performed by just one woman, but that the entire family is participating. Mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, grandaunt, sister-in-law, daughter, granddaughter, cousin, niece, all are working hard to establish a basic standard of living. The more I looked around, the more I became impressed by the enormous efforts that these families perform, and the more respect I had for this creative community.
She even would have agreed to
photograph her entire collection.
Unfortunately, I lacked time to do so…
Not everyone is copying each other’s
style and example. Everyone tries to
be as creative as possible, in order
to generate more attention from
tourists and therefore more income.
