Destination Fortaleza, capital of the state of Ceará.
The bus travel from Fortaleza to Belo Horizonte went through the states of Ceará, Pernambuco, Bahia, and Minas Gerais.
Ceará isn’t a large Brazilian state; the surface (149,000 square km) is only 1.75 percent of the total area of Brazil. However, Ceará is no less than 3.5 times the size of the Netherlands. A great part of the state of Ceará suffers the consequences of the lack of rainfall. The population is about the size of the city of Rio de Janeiro: approximately eight million. Most of its inhabitants reside at the coastline of the Atlantic Ocean. Ceará belongs to the Northeastern Region; it shares many cultural features with neighboring states.
Our bus ride through the state of Ceará went via BR116, which has a length of 547 km to the border with Pernambuco. The highway crosses the state of Paraíba for few kilometers. Before we were about to cross the São Francisco River with a ferry, the highway had to be followed for another 92 km. The BR116 continues until the border with Uruguay, and is almost 4400 km long. About three times the distance between, let’s say … Amsterdam and Naples.
