The final kilometers of the bus travel, in Minas Gerais.
Destination São Luís, capital of the state of Maranhão.
The bus travel from São Luís (MA) to Belo Horizonte (MG), through the dry winter landscape in the mountainous state of Minas Gerais.
The bus travel from São Luís back to Belo Horizonte lasted fifty hours and went through various Brazilian states. From the arid and desert-like state of Piauí to the winter dry states of Bahia and Minas Gerais. The landscape in the latter states was dry, because the rain season had stopped in April. Yet it was at the end of July. The states in Southeast Brazil (Espírito Santo, Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, the climate has in fact two extremes: a wet and warm summer season (from October to March), and a cool and dry winter season (from April to September). In Belo Horizonte, capital of Minas Gerais, there is a little difference between the average winter temperature (23 degrees centigrade) and the average summer temperature (28 degrees). But even for this small difference, you will feel it as a big difference. .
Cattle must walk many kilometers for some green
The mountainous landscapes in southern Bahia and in Minas Gerais are lush green during the rainy summer; in winter, due to the prolonged lack of rain, the landscape undergoes a complete metamorphosis: grayish green and dusty. The vegetation then longs for the first rains in spring time, which turns the dusty, dry landscape in a muddy one. One may smell the fresh scent of rain and young vegetation. The dry air (sometimes even less than twenty percent humidity!) becomes more humid again. Many Brazilians suffer from allergy and airway problems due to the low humidity. They will be happy again, when the first rain showers of the long rain season arrive.
