(International Lions’ Club). The day refers to the birth of the founder of Lions, Melvin Jones (1879-1961). He founded Lions in 1917. Lions Club Brazil was founded in 1952.
Dia do Tratado de Madri
(Treaty of Madrid). This treaty was signed in 1750 by both the Portuguese and the Spanish empires. The treaty replaced the 1494 Treaty of Tordesilhas, which divided the Southern American continent in a Spanish and a Portuguese part. However, the Portuguese expanded westward significantly. The new treaty allowed these expansions, based on the Latin law: Uti possidetis, ita possideatis (who owns by fact, owns by right). The Treaty of Madrid was replaced by the Treaty of El Pardo in 1761.
