Dia dos Namorados

This is a famous verse from a song by Brazilian sex bomb: Carmen Miranda (1909-1955). In Brazil, ‘Dia dos Namorados’ has the same status as Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, and Children’s Day: big business for retail Valentine’s Day is hardly celebrated in Brazil, but 12 June is largely celebrated. Some sources mention that 12 June is the vesper of 13 Juni, feast day of St. Anthony, patron saint of marriages.
Dia do Correio Aéreo Nacional
(Airmail). Because of the huge distances within Brazil, large part of delivery mail is transported by airplanes. On 12 June 1931, two lieutenants of the Brazilian air force performed the first airmail flight in Brazil, between Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. They suffered severe delays due to strong winds en had to deviated their flight to a horse racing track in São Paulo. They then took a taxi in order to deposit the mail at the post office. Lieutenant Nelson Freire Lavenère-Wanderley became patron of the Brazilian airmail (Correio Aéreo Nacional).

Bus hijack Linha 174 in Rio de Janeiro.
The bus, destination Jardim Botânico, was attacked by Sandro Barbosa do Nascimento, who – as a child – witnessed the massacre of street children by members of the military police in 1993. This massacre is known as Chacina da Candelária: eight children were killed. Sandro locked himself inside the bus and took hostage ten female passengers. The hostage was broadcast live on tv. Sandro then took one teacher outside with him. A police officer then shot him down. The teacher was killed, the attacker was captured. A movie of this drama was released with the title ‘Ônibus 174 ‘(2002).
