JANUARY 2007: Pampulha Arts Museum
One of the best visited touristic locations in Belo Horizonte is Pampulha District, with the artificial lake and the Mineirão Soccer Stadium. The lake is flanked by a number of buildings form the Pampulha Architectonic Complex. Museu de Arte da Pampulha, one of Oscar Niemeyer’s works, is part of this Complex. The building, constructed between 1942 and 1944, was originally a casino, until the ban on casinos in Brazil in 1946. In 1956, the former casino was transformed into a Museum of Modern Art. The statue (‘Nu’, 1943) is a creation of Polish sculptor August Zamoyski (1893-1970). The wooden sign on the left warns you not to step on the grass.
