The notorious bandit Lampião joins the Cangaço gang with the intention to seek revenge for his murdered father.
Virgolino Ferreira da Silva, nicknamed Lampião (because of the shine of his polished carbine), may be considered as the most notorious of the Cangaço: a gang who targeted the land owners, the (local) government, and European colonists. When his parents were murdered as a result of a vendetta, Virgolino and some of his brothers joined the Cangaço. There he met Maria Alia da Silva, who was married with a shoemaker. She left her husband and joind Lampião, and accepted the nickname Maria Bonita. Lampiao, Maria Bonita and the rest of the gang were betrayed, and killed in an ambush set up by the ‘monkeys’ (federal soldiers). Lampião became a Brazilian celebrity. He is not only considered as a bandit, but also as a local hero, who fought against the unjust system.
