Palmeiras won the Copa Rio Internacional, after winning the finals against Juventus (ITA).
After the loss of the Brazilian national team in the World Cup final in 1950, the Brazilian soccer association organized an international tournament for national champions. The tournament was held with two groups of four, playing in Rio de Janeiro and in São Paulo. In Rio the participating teams were: Vasco (BRA), Sporting (POR), Austria Wien (AUT), and Nacional (URU). In São Paulo the participating teams were: Palmeiras (BRA), Red Star (YUG), Juventus (ITA), and Nice (FRA). The semi finals were matches between Vasco and Palmeiras, and between Juventus and Austria Wien. Since 2001, Palmeiras had tried having this tournament recognized by the FIFA, as the first world cup for club teams. The FIFA recognized that indeed, in March 2007. But other Brazilian teams followed to fight for their recognition as a world cup winner. At the end of December 2007, FIFA withdrew that decision, and Corinthians (winner of the world cup for club teams in 2000) was declared as the first winner of a world cup for club teams.
