Death of Brazilian heroine Anita Garibaldi.
Ana Maria de Jesus Ribeiro was born in Laguna (SC) in 1821. When she was about 14, she married the shoemaker Manuel Duarte de Aguiar. Three years later, she met her new love Giuseppe Garibaldi, who was 14 years older than Ana. She changed her name in Anita. Together with Garibaldi, Anita became involved in the war between imperialists and secessionists in Santa Catarina, in 1839. Garibaldi – in a lost position – asked Anita to seek for help. She did not manage, but her troops claimed the victory. At a later time, Anita was responsible for munition transport, She was captured, but Anita, pregnant, managed to escape. The couple went for Montevideo to marry there. They got three children. Anita was nurse during the battle of Montevideo. Anita moved then to France, Garibaldi followed her, one year later. In Rome, Garibaldi, with Anita at this side, commanded the revolt. She had to flee, when the French conquered the city. Anita was pregnant again. She became ill and died at the age of 28. Certain sources reveal that Anita suffered from leukemia. Anita is considered as the heroine of the ‘two worlds’.
