Dia do Nordestino
(Northeast Brazilian). A Nordestino is an inhabitant of the northeastern region in Brazil. This region consists of the states: Bahia, Sergipe, Alagoas, Pernambuco, Paraíba, Rio Grando do Norte, Piauí, Tocantins, Ceará, and Maranhão. The northeast is the poorest Brazilian region. Many nordestinos have left their native city and have migrated to the more prosperous southern and southeastern Brazil, in their hope of finding work and a better life. Unfortunately, many nordestinos will never achieve their dreams: the least fortunates are without wrok and live in favelos. The Dia do Nordestino in Rio de Janeiro is on 13 december, the day of birth of singer Luiz Gonzaga (1912-1989).

Brazilian racer Manoel de Teffé won the first Grand Prix of the city of Rio de Janeiro.
The baron won the race, driving in his Alfa Romeo, on the new Circuito da Gávea – that had the dubious nickname “Devil’s trampolin” with its hundred curves. Alternating parts of the circuit were unpaved, or covered with concrete or asphalt. The races at the Gávea circuit were held until 1954.

Leakage of 22 thousand liter radioactive wastewater from nuclear plant Angra I.
Angra I, a prestigious project at the time of the military dictatorship, was inaugurated only 12 years after the start of its construction, 1983. Since then, the reactor was stopped, more than twenty times due to technical failures. The leakage of radioactive wastewater lad to massive panic among the inhabitants of nearby cities of Angra dos Reis and Paraty. Roughly fifty thousand cancer cases may be related to this nuclear accident. Two employees became contaminated with radioactive wastewater.

Birth of Evaristo Pereira da Veiga e Barros (1799-1837), songwriter of the Brazilian Hymn of Independence.
This hymn, accompanied by the music that was composed by emperor Pedro I, is not the Brazilian hymn. In his active life, Evaristo was poet, journalist, politician, and bookseller. He was bookseller until his death.
Já podeis, da Pátria filhos,
Ver contente a mãe gentil;
Já raiou a liberdade
No horizonte do Brasil.
Brava gente brasileira!
Longe vá… temor servil:
Ou ficar a pátria livre
Ou morrer pelo Brasil.
Os grilhões que nos forjavam
Da perfídia astuto ardil…
Houve mão mais poderosa:
Zombou delas o Brasil.
Não temais ímpias falanges,
Que apresentam face hostil;
Vossos peitos, vossos braços
São muralhas do Brasil.
Parabéns, ó brasileiro,
Já, com garbo juvenil,
Do universo entre as nações
Resplandece a do Brasil.
