The transfer was ordered by president Bento Gonçalves. In nine years time of the existence of Republic of Piratini (what is now the Brazilian state Rio Grande do Sul), the capital was transferred various times: Piratini, Caçapava do Sul, Alegrete, São Gabriel, Bagé (for 2 weeks only), and Borja (not official).
