Dia da Educação
(Education). Education is essential for personal, social, cultural, and economical development. Education in Brazil is still not of an acceptable level. However, programs have been introduced to achieve five ambitious goals in 2022:
1. “Every Brazilian between 4 and 17 years must attend school.” In 2010, the percentage was 91.2 percent.
2. “Every Brazilian child must be completely alphabetized at the age of 8.” In 2011, writing (54%), reading (56%), and mathematics skills (43%) were well below the target of 80 percent.
3. “Every student of the primary and high school should apprehend the materials for at least 70 percent.” In 2011, the 2011 goals weren’t reached, with the exception of mathematics in the first years of the primary school.
4. “Every Brazilian should have completed the high school at the age of 19.” In 2011, only 65 percent had concluded the primary school, and 51 percent the high school.
5. “Government expenditure in education should increase to at least five percent of the BBP.” In 2010, the percentage was 4,3 percent.
Dia Nacional da Caatinga
(Caatinga vegetation). This vegetation type is only found in the northeastern part of Brazil. The Tupi word may be translated as ‘white forest’. Caatinga mainly consists of small thorny trees and arid-adapted grasses. During the short raining season, annual plants appear and flower. People living in this region are considered among the poorest in Brazil. The day was established per presidential decree on 20 August 2003. The date refers to the birth of Brazilian ecologist João Vasconcelos Sobrinho (1908-1989).
