Dia do Cartógrafo
(Cartographer). The day was introduced by Sociedade Brasileira de Cartografia. The date is a reference to the oldest registered cartographic work in Brazil, which was made on 27 April 1500 (correction according to the Gregorian Calendar: 6 May). Mestre João, crew member of Cabral’s fleet, determined the latitue of Baía de Cabrália, what is now Porto Seguro.
Dia Nacional da Matemática
(Mathematics). The Sociedade Brasileira de Educação Matemática (SBEM; Brazilian Society of Mathematics Education) chose 6 May to commemorate the birth of teacher and writer Julio César Melo e Souza (1895-1974), better known as Malba Tahan (full pseudonym: Ali Iezid Izz-Edim Ibn Salim Hank Malba Tahan). Malba Tahan wrote more than a hundred books, mainly about mathematics. His most famous work was ‘O Homem que Calculava’ (The man who calculated). The date was introduced by law PL 3482/2004.

Death of federal deputy Enéas Carneiro (1938-2007).
Enéas was born in the state of Acre, but moved to Rio de Janeiro, to study. He graduated in mathematics and physics, and in 1965 he was granted the medical degree. In 1985, he founded PRONA (Partido da Reedificação da Ordem Nacional; Party of the Reconstruction of the National Order). He ran for the presidency three times, and managed to obtain a surprisingly high number of votes, despite the few seconds of airtime granted. His exotic appearance (bald, big black beard, and thick glasses, his catchphrase ‘Meu nome é Enéas (“My name is Enéas”) made him popular. He died of the consequences of leukemia.

Presidential decree introduced Dia das Mães (Mother’s Day).
World boxing title for Brazilian Éder Jofre, in the featherweight class.
Éder (1936) participated in the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne, where he reached the quarterfinals. In 1960, he became WBA world champion in the bantam weight class. In 1963, he also became WBC world champion. In 1973, he won the world title in the heavier WBC featherweight class. During his career, he won 72 (50 knockouts) and lost 2 matches.
