Dia Mundial do Meio Ambiente e da Ecologia
(World Environment Day). In the past century, environmental and ecological affairs received more attention. One century earlier, however, it was German biologist Haeckel who started the relationship between man and his environment. The knowledge obtained shows us that this relationship is firm but fragile. Decades and dozens of reports later, political leaders finally acknowledge that man has caused and is being causing serious damage on the environment. The Brazilian Institute for Geographical Sciences and Statistics (IBGE) hosts two interactive websites with all Brazilian animal species and bird species that are subject to extinct., and another interactive website with the various vegetation types: still untouched by man, already changed by humen intervention, threatened by human intervention. The institute also offers a Flash program in with 24 of the most endangered animal species are to be localized: 5 primate species, 1 turtle species, 1 fish species, 2 mammal species, 1 butterfly species, and 14 bird species. The World Environment Day (WED) is a UNEP (United Nations Environmental Program) initiative, founded in 1972. The WED was introduced in the same year.
