Dia Nacional de Combate à Violência Contra a Mulher
(Combat against Violence against Women). Sad numbers demonstrate that there is still much violence against women, worldwide. Of all causes of death of women worldwide, between 15 and 44, seven percent is due to violence. Off all murders, with women as victims, more than fifty percent is committed by the (ex-) partner (data WHO). UNICEF has calculated that worldwide, one out of ten women runs the risk of rape or forced sex. It is suggested to have this Brazilian day on the same day as the international day, on 25 November.

BRAZILIAN HISTORY:
1998
Former Polícia Militar Officer, Otávio Lourenço Gambra sentenced to 65 years imprisonment.
Otávio was found guilty on charges of murder and abuse of power. Otávio (1948) was known as an exemplary police officer, according to his colleagues, who fulfilled his duties adequately. However, in favela Naval, in the São Paulo metropolitan region, Otávio was known as a monster, nicknamed “Rambo”. He beat defenseless civilians, tortured them, blackmailed them, robbed them. In the night of 7 March 1997, he shot dead a motorist, Mário José Josino, age 30, working in an office. The same night, ‘Rambo’ and his colleagues beat some locals. The police officers were not aware that their actions were filmed by an amateur, who sent his tape to a local news broadcaster. In 2005, Otávio, who was sentenced to 15 years in appeal, was transferred to semi-regime: he was allowed to leave the prison at day, but had to return at night. In 2012, he was a free man, who moved to the interior in order to restart his life.
