DAY OF:
Dia do Árbitro Esportivo
(Referee). Being a referee appears an ungrateful task, but necessary too (see video below). They (men and women!) are often criticized, but without their presence, and their implementation of the rules, certain matches would end up uncontrollable or even out of control.

Dia Nacional do Cerrado
(Savannah). The cerrado biome type accounts for about one fourth of Brazil, with marginal extensions in neighboring Bolivia and Paraguay. The cerrado is located in eight Brazilian states, mainly in the states of Goiás and Minas Gerais. It is widely known for its richness in plant and animal biodiversity. The cerrado is being threatened by the ongoing expansion of soja and eucalypt tree plantations. For instance, the state of São Paulo was covered for 14 percent by the cerrado biome. Now the cerrado counts for 0.84 percent of the state’s area. At present, only three percent of the cerrado is protected area.

Dia Nacional do Karatê
(Karate). The Confederação Brasileira de Karatê (Brazilian Karate Federation) has introduced the Day of Karate since 2002. The day of September 11 (1987, at 15 h 25) karate was recognized by the Brazilian Martial Arts Federation (Confederação Brasileira de Pugilismo), and the foundation of the Brazilian Karate Federation. Karate (the meaning is ’empty hand’) has its origin in Japan, but also is being practiced for centuries in India, China, and Taiwan. Karate as we know now, finds its origin at the Japanese island of Okinawa, where Japanese occupiers banned the use of weapons by the inhabitants of the island. Karate without the use of weapons was born. From Okinawa, karate spread through Japan and the entire world. At the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, the Brazilian karate team gained no less than 7 medals. The Federation also organizes social projects, such as “Karatê Alem do Esporte“, offering free karate classes for fourteen thousand children.
