DAY OF:
Dia da Construção Civil
(Civil Construction). In the state of Rio de Janeiro, this day is held on the third Monday in October. However, since 2000, the day is also commemorated on 25 October, on the feast day of frei Antonio de Sant’Anna Galvão, who was canonized in 2012. In 2000, Pope John Paul II declared Frei Galvão as patron saint of the construction workers, since Frei Galvão worked as a constructor’s assistant. Therefore, in 2007, October 25 was declared as the Day of the Civil Construction Worker.

Dia do Sapateiro
(Shoemaker). Around 380, two patrician Roman brothers, Crispin and Crispianus, converted themselves into Christianity. They had to leave Rome and settled themselves in Gallia, now France. They dedicated themselves to shoe-making and lived in poverty. Because of their conversion, the brothers were persecuted and captured. They were thrown in the river, fasted to big stones. They managed to escape and were captured again. They were then beheaded. Their feast day is on 25 October. However, during the Second Vatican Council, their names were removed from the Catholic calendar, because their existence was doubted. The saints Crispin and Crispianus are still considered as patron saints of shoemakers. It is estimated that about 350 thousand shoemakers are active in Brazil, which 130 thousand work in the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul only.

According to the official version, he had hanged himself. One week later, about eight thousand people witnessed an ecumenical mass, as a silent protest against the military regime. Three years later, the coroner responsible confessed that he had signed the autopsy document without having examined the corpse. In the same year, the Federal Justice Department was held responsible for illegal imprisonment, torture and death of the journalist. In 2004, two unedited photos of Vladimir, naked in a cell just before his death, were published in a journal. His widow declared that these pictures were not showing her late husband. Only in 2013, Herzog’s family received a new death certificate, in which the true cause of death was mentioned.

1636
Dutch nobleman Maurício de Nassau started his travel to Brazil.
Since 1568, the Republic of the United Netherlands fought an independence war against Spain. During the Iberic Union (Union of Spain and Portugal), the Dutch tried to conquer Portuguese possessions, which they considered as the weakest pillars of the Spanish Empire. The Dutch invaded Northeast Brazil, and established a Dutch colony ‘New Holland’ in 1630. Count Mauricio de Nassau, who had the rank of an army captain, was invited to govern the new colony. On 25 October 1636, his fleet departed from the island of Texel. The Dutch fleet arrived on 23 January 1637 in Recife. Mauricio governed the Dutch colony for seven years.
