Dia do Alfaiate

Dia do Barbeiro e Cabeleireiro
(Barber, Hairdresser). Already in the Greek Era, barbers were very active. In that time, it was common to grow hair, mustaches and beards. However, the slaves had short hair, and were not allowed to grow a mustache or beard. In more recent ages, the barber also offered a warm bath or sauna or a massage. Another lucrative activity was bleeding. It was quite common that the barber also pulled teeth. Only in the 20th century, female hairdressers appeared. In Brazil it is very common that women spend many hours in the salon: hairdressing, the eyebrows, the nails, and depilation of arms and legs. The Dia do Barbeiro is held on November 3 in Rio Grande do Sul since 2001. Some other cities and states have their day on May 11.

BRAZILIAN HISTORY:
1839
Execution of Manuel Congo, leader of the largest quilombo in the state of Rio de Janeiro.
During the colonial and imperial eras, when slavery was still common, slave rebellions were also quite common. Slaves tried to make the lives of their master difficult, by instigation, rebellion, and destruction of their properties. Slaves, who managed to escape, fled into the forest, and created their settlements. These settlements are called quilombos. The slave owners and soldiers were not able to penetrate through the quilombos. From these quilombos, fazendas were regularly attacked, and more slaves were freed. Manuel Congo was slave of Manoel Francisco Xavier, from the Fazenda da Maravilha, in the region of Paty do Alferes, Rio de Janeiro. Manuel was the leader of the rebellious slaves, and the leader of the quilombo, which existed of more than three hundred freed slaves. Xavier called in the help of t he authorities to capture Manuel and his rebels. The quilombo became destroyed, the negroes were captured. Among them was Manuel, king of the quilombo, and Marianna Crioule, the queen. Manuel – then 49 years old – was condemned to death by hanging, while Marianna was forced to witness his execution. Manuel is now considered as a martyr in the battle against slavery. Quilombos were found throughout the country. The most famous is the Quilombo de Palmares, which was more or less an independent state within Brazil for more than 65 years. At present, quilombos still exist, in Minas Gerais, Bahia, Sergipe, São Paulo, for instance. Five quilombos are located on the peninsula of Alcântara, nearby São Luis.
“Manuel Congo? Mariana Crioula? Eu sempre soube dele, mas nunca foi mesmo muito falado por aqui, no Paty dos Alferes… dela, contavam muitas coisas, que tinha as costas riscadas de ferro quente e andava sempre querendo fugir… Mas isso tudo é igual ao vento, vai passando, passando…”

1922
Brazilian National Hymn (Hino Nacional Brasileiro) officially accepted as the national hymn.
The text is from Joaquim Osório Duque Estrada and the music from Francisco Manoel da Silva. In the colonial era, the Portuguese hymn was used, with the text that changed when there was a new king or queen on the throne. It lasted at least nine years since the independence of Brazil, since the nation had its own hymn. According to Luís Heitor de Azevedo Correia the new hymn was sung publicly for the first time on April 13, 1831, in Rio de Janeiro. In 1909, the text became official, and in 1922 the hymn itself.

Ouviram do Ipiranga as margens plácidas
Desafia o nosso peito a própria morte!
Ó Pátria amada,
Idolatrada,
Salve! Salve!
Brasil, um sonho intenso, um raio vívido
De amor e de esperança à terra desce,
Se em teu formoso céu risonho e límpido
À imagem do Cruzeiro resplandece.
Gigante pela própria natureza,
És belo, és forte, impávido colosso,
E o teu futuro espelha essa grandeza.
Terra adorada
Entre outras mil,
És tu, Brasil,
Ó Pátria amada!
Dos filhos deste solo és mãe gentil
Pátria amada,
Brasil !
Deitado eternamente em berço esplêndido,
Ao som do mar e à luz do céu profundo,
Fulguras, ó Brasil, florão da América,
Iluminado ao sol do Novo Mundo!
Do que a terra mais garrida
Teus risonhos lindos campos têm mais flores;
“Nossos bosques têm mais vida”,
“Nossa vida” no teu seio “mais amores”.
Ó Pátria amada,
Idolatrada
Salve! Salve!
Brasil, de amor eterno seja símbolo
O lábaro que ostentas estrelado
E diga o verde-louro desta flâmula
Paz no futuro e glória no passado.
Mas, se ergues da justiça a clava forte,
Verás que um filho teu não foge à luta,
Nem teme, quem te adora, a própria morte.
Terra adorada
Entre outras mil,
És tu, Brasil,
Ó Pátria amada!
Dos filhos deste solo és mãe gentil
Pátria amada,
Brasil !
