The inauguration marked the arrival of emperor Dom Pedro II in the province of Sergipe Del Rey. The Ponte do Imperador was especially constructed to facilitate the arrival of the imperial steamboat ‘Apa’.

Ensign Antônio José da Costa followed his travel in the direction of Lages, crossing the Imaruí River (SC).
Antônio commanded a group of 24 people who discovered the plains and cleared a path to Lages, in Santa Catarina.

Brazilian aviator Augusto Severo de Albuquerque Maranhão became one of the first men to fly in a balloon.

Birth of Brazilian-American student and teacher Stuart Angel Jones, son of Zuzu Angel
Stuart participated in the armed resistance (MR-8) against the dictatorship and was captured in 1971. He was reportedly tortured, and according to a witness, had died after his mouth was attached to a jeep’s exhaust pipe and dragged over the courtyard subsequently. His mother Zuzu died, under suspicious circumstances, in a car crash in 1976.
