Dia Nacional do Bombeiro
(Firemen) In 1856, the first fire department was founded in Rio de Janeiro, the Corpo Bombeiros the Provisórios da Corte, by imperial decree. Previously, in case of a fire, the church bells sound that gathered the inhabitants out of their houses, in order to create long human chains handing over buckets of water to each other, to extinguish the fire. Today each state has its own corps, with its own emblem and its own anthem. There is also a national anthem for the fire department. More than 60 000 Bombeiros are active in fire fighting, rescue work, and assistance in accidents. In the state of Rio de Janeiro, more than 200,000 actions were registered in 2006, involving 128,000 lives. Bombeiros also provide first medical aid and ambulance services. They have received military training, like the Policia Militar. In six states they are connected with Policia Militar, in other states they work autonomously. Day of Fire has been introduced in 1954.
Hymn of the firemen:
“Hino do Soldado do Fogo”
Conta as chamas e lutas ingentes
Desfraldando a auriverde bandeira,
Nossos peitos são férrea muralha,
Contra audaz agressão estrangeira
Missão dupla o dever nos aponta:
Vida alheia e riqueza salvar

The Brazilians in the southeastern states resisted against this occupation, causing bloody battles. The Portuguese forces were led by Luís Inácio Madeira de Melo, who was ruthless against a Brazilian abbess, Sóror Joana Angelica, who refused him access to her convent. She was slain and became the first Brazilian martyr. The Portuguese occupation ended only with the surrender of the Portuguese in Bahia, on July 2, 1823.
