Canoa Quebrada: the azure blue ocean…
Cineasts and hippies
Canoa Quebrada is located about 175 km east of Fortaleza, capital of the state of Ceará. Canoa Quebrada (‘Broken Canoe’) already was inhabited since 1650, with the arrival of fishermen. These fishermen dominated for centuries, until the arrival of French filmmakers in the sixties of the past century. They became very enthusiastic of Canoa Quebrada, as their desired film location. These filmmakers (including Jean-Luc Godard) were the founders and followers of “Nouvelle Vague’, a movement that is considered as a reaction upon the predictability of many Hollywood films. In the seventies of the past centuries, it were the hippies who ‘discovered’ Canoa Quebrada. They fell in love with the natural beauty of the region, and the warmth and openness of its inhabitants. Since a few decades, more touristic facilities have been created, and is now attracting a growing number of Brazilian and international tourists.
Broadway, the central road in Canoa Quebrada
When you think of Broadway, you do not immediately associate one of the world’s most famous street names with a wide beach road. The famous Broadway (originally called ‘Breedeweg’, Dutch for ‘wide road’) is famous because of the musicals and films; therefore it may refer to the filmmakers of Canoa Quebrada. Or maybe it refers to the intensive and diverse night life, which starts after 10 pm. You will find there rock, reggae, funk, disco, and will keep you going on until dawn.
At day, Broadway is almost deserted. All bars and restaurants are closed. With the exception of a coffee corner, and a small supermarket. At day, you will not enjoy your day in Canoa Quebrada in Broadway, but along the beach, in one of the beach barracks.
Serenity at day, in Broadway….
For many (younger) tourists, an ideal beach holiday may be as follows: Getting up at 11 am. Then preparing to go to a beach barrack, where you enjoy your day at the beach, together with your friends. Enjoying the beach, warm ocean water, ice-cold beers, delicious snacks. You will feel hungry at about 4 pm, it is about time for a warm meal. After another breathtaking sunset, you return to your hotel or hostel, where you will take a nap for some hours. You will then take a long shower and make yourself ready for the night life in Broadway. You already have made appointments with your friends at 11 pm, and together you will visit the many bars in Broadway.
Our day was totally different. We had arrived at 5 pm, when we witnessed a breathtaking sunrise. We could take a short rest on the beach, but we lacked comfortable mattresses. It was about 9 pm, when we entered Broadway. We had visited many bars that night. We went from the funk bar to the reggae bar, from the reggae bar to the funk bar, and so on. At about 2 am, we returned to our bus, for our final night in the bus, on the way to our final destination: Fortaleza. V
You can do some shopping in the local
supermarket, at day.
