Dia Mundial da Cruz Vermelha Internacional
(World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day). The first World Red Cross Day was on 8 May 1948. In 1984, the day was renamed World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day. On 8 May 1828, Henri Dunant, founder of the Red Cross was born. He was the first recipient of the Nobel Peace price. The International Committee of the Red Cross was founded in 1863, and was awarded the Nobel Peace price three times.

(Plastic Artist). The date commemorates the birth of one of the most important Brazilian plastic artists from the 19th century:painter José Ferraz de Almeida Júnior (1850-1899). He was student of Victor Mereilles, Pedro Américo and Jule Lê Chevrel. He produced about 300 paintings; many of his paintings show farmer’s daily life. The day was introduced in 1950.

Paulo Gonçalves was born in Santos (SP). He initially worked for Telégrafo Inglês, but he dedicated himself to journalism.
He worked for various newspapers in his city, as an editor. He also taught at a college. In 1922, his debut book was published: ‘Yara’, which gained enthusiast critics. He also wrote comedy pieces, like “As mulheres não querem alma’.

FUNAI made the first contact with an then unknown indigenous tribe.

At least 30 indigenous of the Tsohom-Dyapa tribe were living under dominion of another, larger tribe: the Kanamari. They were encountered in the state of Amazonas: in the indigenous reserve Vale do Javari. FUNAI is the government-based organ Fundação Nacional dos Índios (National Foundation for the Indigenous People).
