The Artesanato Fair in Curitiba is very popular.
Tourists may find Sunday Fairs in various Brazilian cities. Those fairs are not the markets where you may buy fresh vegetables, fruits, eggs, cheese or fish; instead, you will find a lot of artesanato – Brazilian handicraft – there. Artesanato may be best described as a collection of handmade objects that may serve as decoration or for daily use. Objects for daily use, such as stone pots and pans, wooden ladles, glass bottles, and cotton cloths. Decorative objects such as statues, jewelry, paintings, vases, lamps, souvenirs. Each Brazilian region is associated with different types of artesanato; therefore, one may find a huge variety of handicraft, from Amazonas to Pernambuco, from Ceará to Rio Grande do Sul.
Art for sale
Every stand on such a fair is a lust for the eye, although some handcraft may be present in various copies at different stands. The vendors do not really need to shout for attention, but will wait patiently for curious and buying-eager customers. They proudly show their merchandise, when asked for, but avoid to sell their merchandise in an more aggressive way. It is not uncommon to see them working on new merchandise, and often the entire family is producing new handicraft. When you are about to buy some handicraft, it is common use to bargain, and gain some discount. Paying cash is preferred and may be rewarded with even more discount.
Waiting for the customers.
One of Brazil’s most popular fairs is the so-called ‘Feira Hippie’ in Belo Horizonte. This fair is held on Sundays from dawn until two pm. There are hundreds of stands in one of the main avenues. Another interesting fair is the Feira Hippie in Rio de Janeiro, at Praça General Osório, at walking distance from the beaches of Arpoador and Ipanema. Alson In Recife, such a fair is located at a popular beach: Boa Viagem. In Curitiba, the large fair is held on Sundays, throughout the city center, with thousands of stands.
