1945
Inauguration of Jardim Zoológico (ZOO) in Rio de Janeiro.
The ZOO was created in Parque da Quinta da Boa Vista, a former residence of the former Imperial Family. Already in 1888, Barão de Drumond took the initiative to create the zoo in the capital. He also created the still popular ‘jogo do bicho‘, a gambling game, in order to have enough funds for the treatment and housing of the animals, and to attract more visitors. The actual ZOO (ZOORIO) of almost 14 hectares hosts more than 2100 animals of 400 different species.
