Dia Internacional do Riso

(International Smile Day). The World Smile Day, created in 1963, is on the first Friday in October. This day is founded by the World Smile Cooperation, which was owned by Harvey Ball (1921-2001), creator of the smiley. The Brazilian Smile Day is on 6 November. However, the International Smile Day is also marked on 18 January, according to various Brazilian sources.
When we smile, we use 12 facial muscles, and when we laugh we move 24 muscles. When we talk and laugh at the same time, we use 84 muscles. Meanwhile, the laugh is not restricted to the face, it involves the entire body. According to dermatologists, laughing slows down the appearance of facial wrinkles.

About 1.3 million liters of oil was leaked in the bay. Petrobrás was held responsible for this leakage.

Vasco da Gama Brazilian Soccer Champion 2000.

That year, the competition was called Copa João Havelange. No less than 116 teams entered this competition at 4 different levels. The final was between São Caetano (SP) and Vasco da Gama (RJ). The first match had ended in a 1-1 draw. The second match, on 30 december 2000, was interrupted when a separation fence collapsed and caused more than 150 wounded. The replay of the second match was on 18 January, and resulted in a 3-1 victory for Vasco, gaining their fourth national title.

In Brazil, Ano da França (Year of France) was in 2009.

First Taça das Nações Indígenas de Futebol (Indigenous Nations’ Soccer Cup) in Juiz de Fora (MG).

The cup was disputed by 19 Brazilian ethnic indian tribes. The 26 matches resulted in 100 goals. Winner was Xerente of the state of Tocantins.

Big fire destroyed Gran-Circus Norte-Americano in Niterói, killing 317 people.

Criminals set fire during a show in the afternoon.The circus had a capacity of 2500 people, the show was fully booked. In only twenty minutes time, the circus was completely destroyed. Most victims were children.

Dia Internacional do Orgulho Gay e Lésbico

(International and Brazilian Gay Pride Day). On June 28, 1969, riots took place in a district in the city of New York, as a fierce reaction on the police action in the Stonewall Inn Bar. These riots are now known as the Stonewall Riots, marking the start of the modern LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) movement. One year later, a protest march was organized, in memory of the Stonewall Riots. More annual marches and parades followed. The LGBT movement used the rainbow flag for the first time in 1978, during a parade in San Francisco. The colors of the rainbow flag symbolize: Life (red), Healing (orange), Sun (yellow), Nature (green), Harmony (royal blue), and Spirit (purple). Occasionally, a black stripe is added, as a sign of the battle against AIDS.

Dia do Ipê Amarelo

(Yellow Elm: Tabebuia chrysotricha). This Brazilian tree is common in the south and southeast of Brazil. The yellow elm species is more common, but there are also white, purple, lilac, and pink variants. The flowering time is in winter: in July and August. The bright yellow flowers provide some more color to the Brazilian winter, and indicate that the spring is coming soon again. The flowers have inspired several poets:

Ontem floriste como por encanto,
sintetizando toda a primavera;
mas tuas flores, frágeis entretanto,
tiveram o esplendor de uma quimera.
Como num sonho, ou num conto de fada,
se transformando em nívea cascata,

Creation of Erário Régio and Conselho da Fazenda in Rio de Janeiro.

These institutes were the precursors of the Brazilian Ministry of Treasury. Both institutes were installed by Dom Fernando José of Portugal. He became the first Minister of Treasury in Brazil, and was also involved in the creation of Banco do Brasil, in the same year.

Dia da Dança
(International Dance Day). In 1982, the International Dance Day was introduced by the International Dance Committee of the UNESCO-linked International Theater Institute. The date is chosen to commemorate the birthday of Jean-Georges Noverre (1727-1810), who is considered as the father of modern ballet.

It is said in the Great Preface of “The Book of Songs,”
an anthology of Chinese poems dating from the 10th to the 7th century BC:

“The emotions are stirred and take form in words.
If words are not enough, we speak in sighs.
If sighs are not enough, we sing them.
If singing is not enough, then unconsciously
our hands dance them and our feet tap them.”

Dance is a powerful expression.
It speaks to earth and heaven.
It speaks of our joy, our fear and our wishes.
Dance speaks of the intangible, yet reveals the state of mind of a person and
the temperaments and characters of a people.

Like many cultures in the world, the indigenous people in Taiwan dance in circle.
Their ancestors believed that evils would be kept out of the circle.
With hands linked, they share the warmth of each other and move in communal pulses.
Dance brings people together.

And dance happens at the vanishing point.
Movements disappear as they occur.
Dance exists only in that fleeting instant.
It is precious. It is a metaphor of life itself.

In this digital age, images of movements take millions of forms.
They are fascinating.
But, they can never replace dance because images do not breathe.
Dance is a celebration of life.

Come, turn off your television, switch off your computer, and come to dance.
Express yourself through that divine and dignified instrument, which is our body.
Come to dance and join people in the waves of pulses.
Seize that precious and fleeting moment.
Come to celebrate life with dance.

Foundation of Ipatinga (MG).
Before the arrival of the Europeans, the region was inhabited by Botocudo Indian tribes. Only in 1752, the first white settlers arrived in the region of Vale do Rio Doce (“Sweet River Valley’). They mainly grew cattle and crops. With the construction of railways, the wood exploitation was started. From 1944, steelwork plants started to function. In 1956, Usiminas was founded, with Japanese help. Since then, Ipatinga grew significantly to the number of 240 thousand in 2011. On 29 April 1964, Ipatinga became dismembered from Coronel Fabriciano.
