In 1914, Palestra Itália was founded, predecessor of Palmeiras. With this, also the Italian colony in São Paulo – along the English and Germans – their own soccer team. The soccer team gained a couple of titles in the early years since the foundation. 1942 became a dramatic year for Palestra, when – thanks to the participation of Brazil in the war against Germany and Italy – the team had to break their ties with the Italian motherland, and also had to rename the team. The new name was Sociedade Esportiva Palmeiras. The players were allowed to wear their colors green and white. Since the introduction of the official Brazilian championship in 1971, Palmeiras became four times champion, in 1972, 1973, 1993, 1994. In 1951, Palmeiras conquered the Copa Rio, at that time considered as the World Cup for club teams. The FIFA had recognized this cup as the world cup for some months, but later withdrew this decision. In 1999, Palmeiras conquered the Copa Libertadores. Another drama happened in 2002, when the team relegated to the second division. One year later, Palmeiras became champion of the second division and returned in the highest division. 1951 Palmeiras won the Copa Rio Internacional, after winning the finals against Juventus (ITA).
After the loss of the Brazilian national team in the World Cup final in 1950, the Brazilian soccer association organized an international tournament for national champions. The tournament was held with two groups of four, playing in Rio de Janeiro and in São Paulo. In Rio the participating teams were: Vasco (BRA), Sporting (POR), Austria Wien (AUT), and Nacional (URU). In São Paulo the participating teams were: Palmeiras (BRA), Red Star (YUG), Juventus (ITA), and Nice (FRA). The semi finals were matches between Vasco and Palmeiras, and between Juventus and Austria Wien. Since 2001, Palmeiras had tried having this tournament recognized by the FIFA, as the first world cup for club teams. The FIFA recognized that indeed, in March 2007. But other Brazilian teams followed to fight for their recognition as a world cup winner. At the end of December 2007, FIFA withdrew that decision, and Corinthians (winner of the world cup for club teams in 2000) was declared as the first winner of a world cup for club teams.

Humility is the lesson that the samba school wants to teach us. Modesty would be a better translation, although Mancha Verde is very ambitious and is aiming for their first championship in the elite class. The school demonstrates the Orixá gods, who are part of the Candomblé cult, in which the natural religions of the African slaves is interwoven with catholicism.

Verdadeiro orgulho de um povo
Derramo sobre a noite a luz do dia
Desperto o universo com um sopro de amor
Sou eu o criador de toda a vida
O homem fiz surgir
Evoluir em novidades geniais
Eureka!! encontrei a explicação
