When you visit the City of Rio de Janeiro, it is recommended to visit the Imperial City of Petrópolis, about 70 km away, in the Fluminense mountainous region. In the seventeenth century, the location gained some importance because it was located along the Estrada Real: the road that was used for transportation of the earth’s riches from the mines in Minas Gerais (Diamantina, Ouro Preto) to the ports of Rio de Janeiro and Paraty. Brazil’s first emperor, Pedro I, liked they moderate climate and decided to start the construction of his summer palace. However, he stepped down before it could be finished. His son, Pedro II (after whom Petrópolis is named), issued a decree to establish a settlement (of German migrants) and a summer palace. In fact, Petrópolis became Brazil’s capital. The lamp post in the picture is not from the imperial era, but is now part of atmospheric illumination in the historic center.

Floriano Peixoto 
(Ipioca, AL 30-04-1839 – Barra Mansa, RJ 29-06-1895)
Consolidator of the Republic
Son of peasants, Floriano made career in the Army from soldier to marshall. He became President, defending national interests and the Brazilian people. His major fact was to break attempts to restore the Empire, and to consolidate the Republic.

Frei Caneca 
(Recife, PE 1779 – Recife, PE 13-01-1825)
Ideologist of the Republic
He was a carmelite father, intellectual and fighter, and above all a liberal republican. He participated in the Pernambucan Revolution in 1817 and led the Confederation of the Equator in 1824. He was condemned to the gallows, but was fusilladed after the refusal of the executioners to hang him.

Plácido de Castro
(São Gabriel, RS 09-12-1873 – Benfica, AC 09-08-1908)
Leader of the Conquest of Acre
He moved from Southern Brazil to Acre, where he led the rubber planters, shedding blood and sweat, to incorporate the territory of Acre into Brazil. His defending action opened a diplomatic front for Brazil, to negotiate the Treaty of Petrópolis with Bolivia in 1902.

(Rio de Janeiro, RJ 29-07-1846 – Normandia (FRA) 14-11-1921)
Savior
During her first regency of the Empire, to replace her father Emperor Pedro II who was traveling outside the country, she sanctioned the ‘Lei do Ventre Livre’, that made the newborn of slaves free. During her third regency, she sanctioned the ‘Lei Áurea’, that was already approved by the parliament, and made the inevitable end to slavery.

Ajuricaba
(Amazonas 18th century – Pará 18th century)
Hero of the indian resistance
Prince of the manaus, an Amazonas tribe, he turned himself as the symbol of the resistance of the indians against colonial repression. He never accepted the Portuguese occupation and led guerrilla attacks against slave merchants. When captured, he threw himself in a river and became a legend.
