By a Carta Régia (Royal Decree) the municipality of Paranaguá was founded. Paranaguáis part of the metropolitan region of capital Curitiba, and counts 140 thousand inhabitants. The name (in Tupi language) may be translated as ‘large, round sea’, and thanks to the coastal location at the Atlantic Ocean, Paranguá serves as the harbor of Curitiba that is located about 90 km land inward. A very popular tourist site is located within the city limits: Ilha do Mel, the Island of Honey, at about 10 km from the city. Another touristic highlight is the historical center of Paranaguá.

Antônio Carlos Bernardes Gomes born in Rio in 1941, in a poor region. Antônio managed to become mechanic, and served for the Brazilian air force for eight years. As a musician he took part of the group ‘Os Originais do Samba’, who also gained fame outside Brazil. Antônio better knows as comedian: he played the role of the negro ‘Mussum’ in the famous Brazilian comedy series ‘Os Trapalhões’. His different way of talking, his weird expressions, and his funny laugh made him immortal. Antônio died due to complications of a heart transplantation.

Chico Xavier (1910-2002) enjoyed a big reputation as a spiritist medium. He “wrote” on behalf of certain spirits (psychographics). Many of these records have been published in books; the most known spirits are Emmanuel and Andre Luiz. It is said that the spirit of Allan Kardec, founder of spiritism, was hosted in Chico.

1980 First visit of pope John Paul II to Brazil. At that time, about 89 percent of the Brazilians were catholic; only 15 years later, this number had shrunk to 75 percent. The visit in 1980 – John Paul II visited Brazil four times – was the first visit ever of a pope. One day after his arrival, the pope held an open air mass in Belo Horizonte. That square later was renamed into Praça do Papa (Pope’s Square).

1887 Third regency of imperial princess Isabel. Isabel Cristina Leopoldina Augusta Micaela Gabriela Rafaela Gonzaga de Bragança e Bourbon, Brazilian Imperial Princess and Countess of Eu (1846-1921). Daughter of Emperor Pedro II, Isabel was three times regent, when her father was abroad (1871-2, 1876-7, 1887-8). Isabel received the nickname ‘Redentora (savior)’, when, in 1888, signed the law (Lei Áurea) that abolished slavery in Brazil. Op 15 November 1889, the Emperor was deposed, the family was exiled. Isabel lived in France, and died shortly before she was about to return to her homeland.

Bartolomeu later founded the city Goiás (formerly Arraial de Sant’Anna, Vila Boa). His nickname was “Anhangüera (bad spirit)”; he gained this nickname from the indians when he made fire with brandy, and threatened the indians to set fire to the rivers and wells, when they would not tell him where to find the gold.
Dia do Tribunal Superior Eleitoral (TSE). (Superior Electoral Court). On 20 May 1932, the TSEwas created per Decree 21.076/1932, with the name Tribunal Superior de Justiça Eleitoral. The institution was established by the 1932 Brazilian Electoral Code. In 1965, this code was replaced (Lei 4.767/65). The court keeps control over the electoral proceedings; its decisions are unappealable, except for constitutional issues.

(Commisioner of Juveniles). The commisioner assists the juvenile judge with practical aspects of juvenile judicial issues. Volunteers have been screened and intensively trained, before they are authorized to provide documents for minors to travel to other Brazilian states or abroad; perform controls at age-restricted sites and locations; protect minors against violence and abuse; take care of abandoned and take actions against the violator. The day was established in the state of São Paulo in 1982, and eventually has become a national day.
