1969 Assassination of Carlos Marighella, Brazilian resistance leader
Carlos was born in Salvador (BA) in 1911. In 1936, he abandoned his Civil Engineering study and became member of Partido Comunista Brasileiro (PCB, Brazilian Communist Party). Soon, he become object of state repression. He was imprisoned, where he was severely beaten and tortured. One year later, Carlos was released but was imprisoned again in 1939. With the fall of Getúlio Vargas’s Estado Novo, Carlos was released in 1945. In the same year, he was elected as Federal Deputy. However, the government of President Gaspar Dutra blocked communists from being active in the Brazilian Congress. The start of the military dictatorship in 1964 motivated Carlos to battle against it. Already in 1964, he exchanged gunfire with the police, and was detained again. He was released in 1967, he joined the Ação Libertadora Nacional. This clandestine group trained guerrilla groups, in order to obtain a massive group of armed civilians against the military government. The group also robbed banks, in order to obtain half a million of dollars for their training activities and the purchase of arms. In 1968, a captured guerrilla member appointed Carlos as one of the leaders. One year later, the kidnapping of American ambassador Charles Elbrick ignited a massive hunt for the guerrilla leaders. On 4 November 1969, he was killed in the city of São Paulo. It still remains unclear how exactly Carlos had been killed; probably he was ambushed and killed by the DPOC police officer Sérgio Fleury.

BRAZILIAN HISTORY:
1637 Foundation of the city of Ubatuba (SP)
Ubatuba is located at ‘Litoral Norte’ (North Coast) of the state of São Paulo. At present, the city counts about eighty thousand inhabitants. A great part of the municipial area of almost 800 square km is covered by the state park ‘Serra do Mar’. At the time of the arrival of the first Europeans, the region was inhabited by Tupiambás indian tribes. German mercenary soldier Hans Staden, who was captured by these indians, was the first to name this region, in 1552.A few decades later, José de Anchieta (one of the founders of the city of São Paulo) was held captive in Iperoig. On 28 October 1637, the settlement of Iperoig became a village, and was renamed into Vila Nova da Exaltação à Santa Cruz do Salvador de Ubatuba. Initially, farming was the principal activity, but the presence of the port of Santos boosted the economic activities in Ubatuba. In 1948, Ubatuba gained the title ‘Estância Balneária’ (beach top location), as one of the fifteen in the state of São Paulo.

1924 Uprising of young army officers, led by Luis Carlos Prestes, in Rio Grande do Sul
In the first decades of the 20th century, Brazilian politics were dominated by the states of São Paulo and Minas Gerais. Other prominent states (Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul, Bahia, and Pernambuco) were dissatisfied by this dominance. Young army officers tried to initiate revolts against the government. The revolt of the ’18 of Forte Copacabana (Rio de Janeiro) was such a revolt. Another uprising took place exactly two years later, in São Paulo. On 28 October 1924, another uprising was started in the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul. It was soon followed by a rebel march which has become famous as ‘Coluna Prestes‘ (or ‘Coluna Invicta’), led by Luis Carlos Prestes. The rebels marched no less than twenty-five thousand kilometers throughout Brazil, in two years and three months. Despite the large numbers of battles (53) with government troops, they had been beaten. The march, the number of rebels was reduced from more than 14 thousand to little more than 600) ended with voluntarily exile in neighboring country Bolivia.
