Dia Nacional do Outdoor
(Billboards). For ages, (natural) surfaces are used for messaging. Messages such as announcements, decrees, laws, and of more recent time, commercials. Since the invention of the lithography in 1793, it was made possible to print posters. In 1858, Jules Cheret became the first artist to use lithography for his drawing ‘Orphée aus Enfers’. In August 1929, the first outdoor company was founded in São Paulo: Publix, which still exists. At that time, the outdoors – to be translated as ‘billboards’ – were small and oval-shaped. Soon more companies were founded that produced billboards,among them is AER: Companhia Americana de Anúncios em Estradas de Rodagem. Thanks to the introduction of the gigantography, the technique to enlarge the size of the posters significantly. the area of the outdoor increased greatly. A standard size is now nine by three meters. Nowadays it is made impossible not to pay attention to the billboards along the roads and highways. Exactly the purpose of those billboard commercials….

Foundation of the city of Uberlândia (MG);
Pioneer Bartolomeu Bueno da Silva, nicknamed ‘Anhangüera’, created a route from São Paulo in the direction of Goiás. The first pioneers who settled themselves in the region of what is now Uberlândia, were commanded by Antônio Eustáquio da Silva e Oliveira, somewhere between 1810 an 1812. The land they were cultivating was situated near the Uberabinha River. The growing flow of migrants to Goiás continued, and some of them stayed in the settlement. In 1846, a chapel was raised, the settlement was named São Pedro. In 1857, the settlement was elevated to the status freguesia (parish), with the name Saõ Pedro de Uberabinha. On 31 August 1888, the municipality of Uberabinha was created. On 19 October 1929, it was renamed into Uberlândia.
Uberlândia now counts 604 thousand inhabitants (2011). Many national and international companies have their (regional) headquarters in Uberlândia. Its strategic position (more than 50 million inhabitants within a radius of 600 km, good for two-thirds of the Brazilian national income) has provided Uberlândia a status of national economic importance. The city hosts various large shopping malls, and is a favorite congress location. Nicknames of the city are ‘Udia’ and ‘Gateway to the ‘Cerrado’ (tropical savannah)’

Foundation of the first school for abandoned children in Brazil.
In those days, about five percent of all children born in freedom, were abandoned. In São Paulo, this percentage was even fifteen percent. The main reason for abandoning children, was the poverty of the mother/ parents, especially in urban regions. This link provides interesting information about a family that has adopted more than FIFTY children.
Transfer of the capital of the Brazilian colony from Salvador to Rio de Janeiro.
The transfer was ordered by Carta Régia, a Royal Decree from Portugal. The main reason for this transfer was that Rio was situated closer to the mines in Minas Gerais, and that this region could be better controlled. Another reason was that Rio was located far from the troublesome sugarcane plantations in the northeast. At that time, it was feared that rebels could approach and attack Salvador. At the time of the transfer, Rio counted a little more than fifty thousand inhabitants.
