(Brazilian Day of Arts). Introduced by law in 1931, to commemorate the foundation of the Escola Real de Ciências, Artes en Ofícios, now called the Escola de Belas-Artes da Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, in 1816.

(International Youth Day). The General Assembly of the United Nations decided, on 17 December 1999, to introduce the International Youth Day on August 12, to be first held in 2000. In various countries, activities take place, paying attention to the youth.

Dia do Presbiterianismo Nacional
(Brazilian Presbyterian Day). On August 12, 1859, Ashbel Green Simonton (1833-1867) arrived in Rio de Janeiro. He was sent by Princeton University and the Theological Seminary of that university. Initially, Simonton was the pastor for the English speakers in Rio, since he did not speak Portuguese. One year later, he was able to hold the mass in Portuguese, for 5 Brazilians. In 1862, the first Brazilian Presbyterian Church was founded in Rio de Janeiro. Simonton died at the age of 34, due to the consequences of yellow fever.
Dia do Cortador de Cana-de-açúcar
(Sugarcane cutter). Working as a sugarcane cutter is very hard and underestimated. It is calculated that the cutter walks about 4 km on a single day, over an area of 200 x 8.5 meter. The cutter then cuts about six tons (!) of sugarcane. Most cutters belong to the lowest class of the society. Now biodiesel is becoming popular, more cane sugar will be cultivated, more sugarcane will have to be harvested.
Foundation of “Deixa Falar”, the first samba school in Brazil.
Ismael Silva (1905-1978) was the founder of this samba school in Rio de Janeiro. Not much later, many more schools are opened in Rio, and in São Paulo. “Deixa Falar” was later renamed into “Estácio de Sá”.

Foundation of Soccer- and Rowing club Botafogo in Rio de Janeiro.
The club has participated in almost all competitions of the highest division in Brazil. Their best achievement is the title of Brazilian champion, obtained in 1968, and in 1995. Not only soccer and rowing take part of Botafogo, but amongst others also athletics, basketball, bowling, jiujitsu, swimming, volleyball, and chess. The most famous soccer player of Botafogo is the legendary Garrincha.

Start of Revolta dos Alfaiates in Salvador de Bahia.
The Revolt is also known as the Conjuração Baiana. Inspired by the French Revolution, revolutionaries attached pamphlets on the walls, calling the people to revolt against the social inequality, and to fight for the ideals of freedom, equality, and fraternity. The rebels were caught om November 8, 1799, and condemned to death.
