Reddish brown
There was a striking but really beautiful contrast between the reddish brown sand cliffs (‘falésias’), the white beach, and the azure blue ocean. These cliffs appear to crumble off; little by little the Brazilian mainland is losing terrain to the Atlantic Ocean. One may imagine the devastation effects here, with the continuous rise of the sea level, and what would be the effects if this region was subject to deadly hurricanes… There was almost no wind on this sunny summer day in January. We refreshed ourselves regularly in the warm ocean water. Our group did not split up and stayed the entire day in one of the largest barracks in Canoa Quebrada. The students drank a lot of ice-cold beer. Other students drank ice-cold, sweet red wine. The owner of this barrack had one of his best days in this season.

Atlantic Ocean
On any touristic location, there are locals who offer a diversity of services to them. Not only ambulant vendors of roasted cheese, sunburn cream, cangas (beach cloths), soda, beer, sunglasses, T-shirts, bikinis, mugs, shrimps, peanuts, lobsters or shells. There are also fishermen who have their boats for rent. For five reais each you can, put on a safety vest, climb on such a small fishing boat. The owner then will sail a few hundred meters, from where tourists can jump in the warm ocean water. We did not hear any promise of swimming dolphins this time. I joined a small group in such a boat. Our cameras were hidden in a wooden box. That was really necessary, since the low boat was floating over the ocean water, with our lower legs dragging in the water. From time to time, waves reached until our bellies. When we were at about one kilometer from the shoreline, the fisherman anchored the boat. We had a breathtaking view of the beaches of Canoa Quebrada. We retrieved our cameras from the box, and took some pictures. The majority of our group did not wait too long, and jumped into the water. The water was really azure blue, a lust for the eye.
We went sailing on the Atlantic Ocean with this kind of boat.
Relaxed
We returned to the beach. Some of us took a nap. Others started having jolly moods and entertained the others with their jokes. I was quite busy with taking pictures of them. Many beer bottles were emptied that afternoon. I did not want to stay all afternoon at the barrack. A small group asked me to join, and I did not hesitate. We went for a long walk along the sand cliffs, and walked on the gangway that links two separate beaches. We were there on time, to witness a colorful sunset. We then returned to the barrack, to prepare ourselves for the night in Broadway.
