Beaches of Armação and Matadeiro
Destination Florianópolis, capital of the state of Santa Catarina.
Two beaches at the eastern coastline of Santa Catarina Island, between Pântano do Sul and Lagoa da Conceição.
from Pântano do Sul (in the ‘heel of the boot’)
to Armação (straight upward)
Even after the climb of the 330 meters high hill and the following descent, Vitór and I still had energy left to continue our walk. This time, we decided to walk to another beach, at a distance of a little more than six kilometers. It was already three-thirty. We had to hurry, in order to arrive at Armação Beach before sunset. The heat was less intense, we now had better walking conditions. We walked briskly, and I was smart enough to carry two liters of water with me. The road to the other beach was narrow, but well-kept. We walked on the roadside, because of the reputation of the Brazilian motorists in general. They do not always count on the presence of walking people along the road, we had to be careful.
The road lead to a valley that was located between ridges. The green meadows were populated by grazing cows. Red Holstein and Frisian cows. Some of them roared enthusiastically at me. Maybe this animal was recently imported from the Netherlands and thought having recognized me? Despite our high pace, we enjoyed the breathtaking landscapes. The green meadows and hills, the small villages. Very relaxing.
We arrived at Armação Beach at four-thirty. A small group of travel companions stayed in a pousada near this beach. A pousada at less than fifty meters from the beach. They all were very enthusiastic about their time in the pousada. It was very quiet, but there were some social activities for the guests. Dancing nights and churrascos, the famous Brazilian barbecues. At the time of our arrival at Armação Beach, they were on another beach, a few hundred meters away.
This beach was called Matadeiro Beach, and was flanked by green hills. There were some houses and little farms on the hills. It was very quiet on the beach. Not surprising, because the beach is not easy accessible. Visitors need to follow a path of large pebbles and smooth rocks, and to cross with a kind of a rope bridge. When we arrived at that beach, we were just in time to enjoy the sunset, with a color combination that I hadn’t observed before. The pictures below show this sunset.
